Before starting your application, you'll need to prepare four required identity documents from the three categories outlined in this article. You can only use each identity document once. The combination of the identity documents you provide must contain your full legal name, date of birth, and photograph.
If you provide identity documents using a former name, such as a maiden name, you'll also need to provide evidence of the name change.
Note: When you apply for an Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) check, your documents will be processed by InterCheck (InterCheck Global Pty Ltd), which is part of Certn Group. InterCheck is authorized by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to conduct criminal record checks.
What you'll need:
- One "commencement of identity" document
- One "primary use in the community" document
- Two "secondary use in the community" documents
Commencement of identity documents
You'll need one "commencement of identity" document from the following list:
- Australian Birth Certificate, or authorised record of birth (not an extract or birth card)
- Current Australian passport
- Valid Australian visa supported by a foreign passport, which is needed for verification (your visa may be in the form of a Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) record or printout)
- Australian citizenship certificate
- Current ImmiCard
Primary use in the community documents
You'll need one "primary use in the community" document from the following list:
- Current Australian driver licence, learner permit, or provisional licence
- Current foreign passport (with an accompanying Australian visa)
- Current proof of age card or photo identity card issued by a government agency
- If you’re under 18, a current student identification card that has your photo and your signature
Secondary use in the community documents
You'll need two "secondary use in the community" documents from the following list:
- Medicare card
- Bank card (must be from separate financial institutions if providing more than one)
- Credit card (must be from separate financial institutions if providing more than one)
- Photo identity card issued by the Australian Government or a state or territory government
- Evidence of right to an Australian government benefit (Centrelink or Veterans’ Affairs)
- Tax File Number advice letter issued by ATO
- Notice of Assessment letter issued by ATO
- Working With Childrens Check card (letter versions are not accepted)
- Enrolment with the Australian Electoral Commission
- Australian tertiary student photo identity document
- Certified official academic transcript from an Australian University
- Australian secondary student photo identity document
- Aviation Security Identification Card
- Maritime Security Identification card
- Photo identity card issued to an officer by a police force
- Photo identity card issued by the Australian Defence Force
- Security guard or crowd control photo licence
- Foreign government issued documents (for example, drivers licence, birth certificate)
- Certificate of identity issued by Foreign Affairs and Trade
- Document of identity issued by Foreign Affairs and Trade
- Convention travel document secondary (United Nations) issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
- Consular photo identity card issued by Foreign Affairs and Trade
- Trusted referees report
- Credit reference check
- Occupational licence (government issued)
