This article is for those who want to learn how to use Lever's platform to request background checks via Certn.
In this article, you will learn how to use the new integration between CertnCentric platform and the Lever Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to request and manage background checks and verifications directly from Lever.
In this article:
Note: Before you start using the Certn-Lever integration, ensure that the setup has been completed. Your team’s Certn admin should have already configured the connection and assigned a default background check package.
Running a background check in Lever
To run a Certn background check using the default package:
- In Lever, advance the candidate (known as an "opportunity") to the trigger stage.
- Lever automatically sends the candidate’s details to Certn.
- Certn sends the candidate a secure email link where they can provide the required information.
- The candidate’s Lever profile will automatically update with Certn status tags as the background check progresses.
- Once completed, the report URL will be available directly from Lever for viewing
Lever specific status tags
| Lever tag | Description |
| CERTN - Submitted | Check has been sent to applicant and is awaiting their response. |
| CERTN - Applicant Started | The applicant has opened the secure link and is completing the requested information. |
| CERTN - In Progress | The applicant has submitted all required details, and Certn is completing the background check. |
| CERTN - Complete (Clear) | All checks have been returned with a clear result. |
| CERTN - Complete (Review) | The check has completed but results require review (e.g., a flagged or non-clear outcome). |
| CERTN - ERROR (No Email) | The candidate does not have an email address in Lever. Add an email and re-advance them to the trigger stage (i.e “Reference Check”). |
Overriding the default package
By default, a single package (configured during integration setup in the Certn Client Portal) is used whenever a candidate is advanced to the trigger stage.
However, you can override this by applying a tag in Lever:
- Go to the candidate’s profile in Lever
- Add the tag that matches the alternate package name (exactly as it appears under Client Portal Package management)
- When the candidate is moved to the trigger stage (i.e Reference Check), that package will run instead of the default.
To add a tag to a candidate in order to run a non-default package on them, select the candidate, and add the non-default package name in the "tags" field (see below). In our example, this tag would be "Canadian-Credit".
Important: The tags for packages are case sensitive, so use the tag exactly as it was set up in the CertnCentric Package Management screen.
Tip: Adding specific tags to a job posting means that all candidates that apply to that posting will inherit that tag. Find more information on creating and using Lever tags.
