Explanation of results
When you order an Enhanced DBS check and it is completed, there are two possible outcomes:
- Clear – No match found
- Review – Results found
The result is determined by whether relevant information was returned as part of the DBS check.
Enhanced DBS checks may include:
- Spent and unspent convictions
- Cautions, warnings, and reprimands
- Relevant local police information
- Barred list information (if applicable)
The final content of the certificate is determined by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) in accordance with legislation and the role being assessed.
Clear results
If an Enhanced DBS check receives a Clear result, this indicates that the certificate contains no criminal record information.
The response summary will state: “Certificate contains no information.”
Review
If an Enhanced DBS check receives a Review result, this indicates that the certificate may contain criminal record information.
If a check receives a Review result, you may wish to contact the candidate and ask them to consider sharing the detailed results with you.
What happens when Identity Verification is pending?
Completion of Identity Verification is required before an Enhanced DBS check can be submitted.
Digital Identity Verification is included as part of the application process. In some cases, n candidate may be unable to successfully complete this step. If this occurs, a manual identity verification process will be required, triggering a Client Portal Task where additional documentation may be requested.
Processing begins once all required information and identity documentation have been successfully submitted.
Next steps
Review the check results from the case’s Case Details page by selecting My Tasks from the left navigation, then selecting the relevant case.
Once you have reviewed the results of the Enhanced DBS check and any other checks within the case, you can record your decision. See the Manage your cases Certn Help article for more information.
Requesting detailed results
As the client, you receive a report showing either a Clear or Review result. The report does not include a detailed listing of any convictions disclosed on the certificate.
If you wish to review detailed results, you may ask your candidate to consider sharing their DBS certificate with you.
The DBS certificate is issued directly to the candidate. If criminal record information is present, the candidate will receive official documentation confirming the details.
