This article is for applicants completing an Identity Verification check requested by an employer or organization, as well as customers completing a criminal record check through myCRC.
Learn how to complete OneID identity verification for your Certn background check, which identification documents are accepted, and what to do if your identity verification fails.
What is OneID Identity Verification?
OneID is Certn's biometric identity verification solution. It verifies your identity by comparing a selfie with your government-issued photo identification (ID).
OneID helps confirm your identity quickly and securely as part of your background check application. In some cases, organizations may use OneID through an integration with Certn's API.
What identification documents can I use for OneID?
Before starting identity verification, make sure you have a valid government-issued photo ID.
Your identification must include:
- Picture
- Identification number
- Expiry date (if your ID does not have an expiry date, enter a future date in this field)
- First and last name (if you have only one legal name, see how to proceed)
- Date of birth
Please note whether a piece of ID is acceptable is determined based on region and check specific requirements. For more information about whether your identity document is valid, contact the Certn Support team.
Acceptable forms of ID include:
- Passport (preferred)
- Driver’s license (issued by government authority at the federal or state/provincial level)
- Age of majority cards (issued by government authority at the federal or state/provincial level)
- Citizenship, Immigration or Permanent Residency cards (when scanning paper documents, place it in landscape rather than portrait)
Important identification requirements:
- Your identification must be an original document, not a photocopy or digital copy.
- Your ID must be clear, valid, and unexpired, where an expiry date applies.
- Identification documents should have been issued within the last 10 years.
- If your identification does not have an expiry date, such as the Philippines UMID or India UIDAI/Aadhaar card, enter a future date (e.g., tomorrow's date) in the expiry date field when prompted.
- If your identification is not listed above, contact the hiring team or organization requesting your background check for further guidance.
Note: Identity verification checks cannot be completed on behalf of other applicants. Please ensure you are the intended applicant before submitting ID documents, and that no one else is shown in the frame of the selfie. If you need help completing the identity verification process, reach out to the Certn Support team for more information.
Completing the verification process
Before you complete the verification process, you will need to agree to the Biometric Consent. Once you agree to the Biometric consent, you will begin the Identity Verification process with biometric verification using our OneID solution.
How do I prepare for OneID Identity Verification?
To help avoid issues when verifying your identity:
- Use a device with a working camera. A smartphone is recommended because laptop cameras may produce lower-quality images.
- Use a regular browser window. Avoid using incognito or private browsing mode.
- Choose a well-lit area. Avoid shadows, glare, and poor lighting.
- Use a plain background. Avoid placing your identification on patterned surfaces.
- Make sure your ID is clearly visible. Ensure the information is readable and nothing is cut off.
Important: You must complete identity verification yourself. Another person cannot complete the process on your behalf, and no one else should appear in your selfie.
How do I complete OneID Identity Verification?
To verify your identity during your Certn background check:
- Open your background check application.
- Navigate to the Identity Verification section.
- Review and agree to the Biometric Consent.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to capture images of your government-issued ID and take a selfie.
- Submit your information to complete the verification process.
OneID will compare your selfie with your identification document to verify your identity.
Why did my OneID Identity Verification fail?
Your identity verification may be unsuccessful for several reasons, including:
- Blurry or incomplete images: Your ID photo is unclear, or important information is cut off.
- Expired identification: Your government-issued ID is no longer valid.
- Multiple unsuccessful attempts: You've submitted dark, blurry, or incomplete images more than three times.
- Information mismatch: The personal details entered in your application do not match your identification.
- Glare or poor lighting: Reflections or shadows prevent the system from reading your ID clearly. Passports can be particularly sensitive to glare.
- Document verification issues: Your identification could not be verified due to document quality or fraud detection requirements.
What should I do if my OneID Identity Verification fails?
The next steps depend on why your identity verification was unsuccessful:
- Expired ID: You'll receive a notification that your ID has expired and be prompted to try again with valid, non-expired identification. If you don't have a valid ID, contact the employer or property management team that requested your background check.
- Additional photos required: Certn may contact you by email to request additional photographs or documentation. Follow the instructions in the email to continue your application.
- Other verification failures: The organization requesting your background check may need to order a new check. Contact them to discuss the next steps.
Before starting another OneID session, review the identification requirements and photo guidelines above.
