Overview
The Workable + Certn integration allows hiring teams to initiate, track, and complete background checks directly within the Workable ATS platform.
Instead of switching between systems or manually triggering checks, recruiters can move a candidate to a configured stage in Workable and Certn automatically initiates the background check. Status updates and report access sync back into Workable, giving your team real-time visibility without disrupting workflow.
With this integration, you can:
- Trigger background checks on any candidate applying for a job
- Choose to order any package of background checks in Certn
- View live status updates inside Workable
- Access reports via PDF or secure Certn portal
- Assign checks to a default group within Certn for centralized management
- Support compliant, post-offer, candidate-initiated screening workflows
The result is faster hiring, stronger compliance alignment, and fewer manual steps for your team.
⚠️Important! At this time, the Workable ATS integration only supports customers in the North American region.
Setup
Step 1: Create one or more packages of checks to use in Workable
- Login to Certn.
- Navigate to “Packages” and select “New Package”.
- Give the package a name and description (make note of the name for Step 3).
- Enable the “Mark this package for ATS use” switch.
- Specify any tags you wish to apply to the package for auditing purposes.
- Select one or more checks you wish to be added to the package.
- Review details of the package.
- Select “Save package”.
- Repeat steps in this section for any additional packages you wish to use in your Workable ATS.
Step 2: Create Workable integration connection in Certn
- Log in to Certn.
- Navigate to “Settings” -> “Integrations”.
- Select “Add” next to the Workable integration to open the integration details page for Workable. You will be presented with a screen that contains a 2-step process to set up the integration.
- In the first step, configure your default Report URL type preference by choosing whether Workable receives:
- A PDF report that does not require a user to login, or
- A secure Certn portal link that requires user authentication to view the report
- Net, configure your default Group using the “Select a group” dropdown. All ordered background checks from this package will be assigned to this specified group within your Certn instance. This will be the default group where you will be able to view all background checks ordered from Workable when you log into Certn.
- Move to step 2 by selecting “Next step”.
- In the second step, copy the API key and save it somewhere securely.
- ⚠️ Important: Please note you will not be able to view this key once you select “Complete setup”.
- Finalize setting up the ATS by selecting “Complete setup”.
Step 3: Share Certn API key with Workable
Finalize setup of the integration by logging into Workable and following these directions:
- Log into Workable as a user with administrative privileges.
- Select your avatar in the top right corner and choose “Settings” from the dropdown that appears.
- Select “Apps” under the “Integrations” header from the sidebar in the settings page.
- Scroll through the “Service Integrations” section and select “Certn” under the “Compliance” header.
- Once you select “Certn”, a dropdown will appear with a single field to enter your API key from Certn, generated in Step 2. Enter this key now and select “Update settings”. At this point, Workable will test this API key and will notify you in real-time if you entered an invalid key or if the account was successfully updated.
Integration Complete
Your Certn + Workable integration is now active.
Recruiters can initiate background checks from within Workable, and status updates and reports will sync back automatically.
If you need to adjust report types or default groups in the future, you can do so directly within Certn by editing the Workable ATS integration connection in the same way that you originally set it up with these instructions.
